Congratulations to Janine Namoro on successfully defending her MA thesis, “Evaluating Diversity-Related Practices and Women’s Representation in Policing: From Policy to Progress?”. Her research explores the potential relationships between the implementation of various diversity-related practices and the proportion of female officers within American police agencies.

Abstract

Women continue to be underrepresented as police officers in the USA. In response, many American police agencies have implemented diversity-related practices to help improve the recruitment, retention, and promotion of women in policing. Using the 2020 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) data series and the 2017 to 2022 Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) datasets, this thesis examines the potential relationships between the implementation of various diversity-related practices and the proportion of female officers within American police agencies. The findings indicate that most diversity-related practices have positive relationships with female officer representation, although some exceptions emerge. This thesis discusses the policy and research implications for diversity initiatives in the police workforce.
