Fond farewell to Tracey Anbinder after more than two decades of dedicated service
After more than two decades at Simon Fraser University, Tracey Anbinder is closing a chapter that has marked the daily experience of students, faculty, and staff along the way.
Tracey began her journey at SFU in 2000 as a psychology student. Over the years, she took on roles as teaching assistant, research assistant, and student advisor, before stepping into management positions with the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, FASS Surrey, FASS Dean’s office and finally, the School of Criminology, the last leg of her career at SFU.
Colleagues describe Tracey as professional, kind, and efficient—someone who mastered every aspect of her role and overcame challenges calmly, focused on the solution. Her thoughtful guidance, attention to detail, and calm presence helped shape the School of Criminology behind the scenes over the last 6 years.
As Tracey steps into retirement, she describes the transition as bittersweet. She’s excited about the freedom and flexibility that come with retirement. At the same time, she’ll miss the structure of a workday, the people, the morning coffee at Renaissance Coffee, and the satisfaction of coming home after a productive day.
“It’s been a tremendous opportunity to work at SFU, particularly also in the School of Criminology at the end of my career,” says Tracey. “I love working with faculty and students, and it’s really been a perfect place for me as a human being to be in an academic environment. It’s been great to have the opportunity to stretch my wings here a little. Thank you.”
Tracey doesn’t plan to slow down—she’s just shifting gears. She has secured a volunteer position with the SPCA, and has also bought a van to travel and explore the province and beyond.
We are deeply grateful for the many contributions Tracey has made to both the School of Criminology and the SFU community at large.
Congratulations on your retirement, Tracey! You (and Kate) will be dearly missed.
Farewell messages
I am so grateful to have worked with Tracey. I have told her many times that my only regret is that I did not meet her 25 years ago, as I would have developed into a different - and better! - person and SFU employee under her guidance. Tracey has been the most grounded, supportive, and measured manager I have worked with in my 20+ years at SFU. Under Tracey's steady and principled mentorship, I have become a more thoughtful (and happy!) person and employee. To say I will miss Tracey is an understatement!
Christie Carlson, Graduate Program Assistant, School of Criminology
Dear Tracey
Thank you for holding the place together for all of these years! We will do our best to honour you by soldiering on, but please know that you are irreplaceable.

Dear Tracey, it has been such a pleasure to work with you at SFU - you will be dearly missed! Enjoy your new adventures as a retiree!
Nicoleta Amponsah, Director, Advancement, FASS
Hi Tracey,
You and I first met when I was teaching a Criminology course at the Surrey campus and you were in FASS admin at Surrey. You were helpful, collegial and highly organized. I was delighted when I realized you had moved over to the School of Criminology in Burnaby. I think I was transitioning out of the School at approximately the same time you were transitioning in, but your positive impact was definitely noticed. You were a tremendous asset to SFU, and will undoubtedly be missed.
Barry Cartwright, Retired Senior Lecturer, School of Criminology
Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement!
SFU won't be the same without you. You will be dearly missed.
Good luck on your next adventure!
Roberta Neilson, GSWS Manager, Academic and Administrative Services
Thank you, Tracey, for always thinking of ways to support me through TA and sessional positions. I know I'm not the only one who has valued your attention to detail and knowing how best to meet the needs of grad students in our program. Your thoughtfulness and caring will be missed, as will Kate and her ball. Enjoy the heck out of retirement!"
Shana Ruess, PhD candidate, School of Criminology
Thank you for all of your help and dedication to the graduate students and for always making our lives easier! You and Kate will be greatly missed!
