SFU Economics introduces new Bachelor of Science degree
Students interested in combining economics with mathematics and computing now have a new degree option at Simon Fraser University.
This fall, SFU’s Department of Economics launched a new Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, designed for students who want a more quantitative approach to understanding how people, businesses, and governments make decisions.
Requiring additional courses in mathematics and computing science, the BSc is a great option for students who enjoy solving complex problems using logic, math, and/or programming.
“The program is designed to prepare students for advanced studies in economics, and to work as economists on interdisciplinary data science teams and in the tech sector, alongside mathematicians and computer scientists,” says outgoing Undergraduate Chair David Freeman.
Seven students enrolled on the day the program opened, indicating a demand for this new offering.
The launch of the BSc in Economics marks an important milestone for SFU’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). While FASS is already home to the BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience offered jointly with the Faculty of Science, the Economics BSc is offered exclusively by FASS.
The program gives students a unique opportunity to combine a deep understanding of economic issues with sought-after quantitative and technical skills.
