Job opportunity - Research Scientist, The Institute for Child, Youth and Family Policy, Brandeis University

June 05, 2019

The diversitydatakids.org project, housed at the Institute for Child, Youth and Family Policy, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University, is seeking a creative applied researcher for the position of Research and Outreach Manager of the Child Opportunity Index.

Position Details

We are looking for an individual interested in studying and improving the interconnections between data, research evidence, policy and practice. The position is at the level of Research Scientist and involves primary responsibility—in close collaboration with senior researchers at ICYFP—for research design, research management, research execution, and related outreach and dissemination activities in support of a large grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aimed at understanding and improving the impact of diversitydatakids.org’s Child Opportunity Index (COI).

The COI is a neighborhood (i.e., census tract level) composite index combining information from 19 indicators covering three domains of opportunity (education, health & environment, and socioeconomic). It comprises data for all census tracts in the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the US.

Since its launch in 2014, the COI has drawn users from diverse sectors and communities, and has been used by local service providers, community organizations, media, researchers, policymakers, planners, and national equity-focused organizations to increase awareness of equity in child neighborhood opportunity, promote community discussions, target services and programs, better understand the connections between neighborhoods and health, and to inform needs assessments and policy development.

To maximize the benefits of the COI, and understand its niche and value for promoting equitable access to healthy communities, we will conduct a systematic assessment of its current users, current uses, and the conditions and processes that lead to use of the COI for positive impact.
