SFU Wins NACUFS Gold Award for “Flavours of the Caribbean” Collaboration

Simon Fraser University’s Dining Services has been honoured with a prestigious Gold Award from the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) in the Sustainability Awards category for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion/Social Justice, recognizing the success of its “Flavours of the Caribbean” collaboration in celebration of Black History Month.

The NACUFS Sustainability Awards acknowledge the pivotal role dining services play in advancing environmental sustainability and social responsibility of a campus.

This year, the Gold Award-winning “Flavours of the Caribbean” collaboration at the Dining Commons brought together the Black Student Centre, SFU Dining Services, and an external community partner to create a meaningful celebration of culture, community, and collaboration.  

“Flavours of the Caribbean” transformed the Dining Commons into a space for cultural exchange, storytelling, and community connection. In partnership with the Black Student Centre, the program featured Chef Cullin David, a local Black chef who co-created a menu showcasing Caribbean-inspired dishes and Black culinary traditions. The initiative encouraged dialogue and learning by highlighting the significance of Black History Month and sharing the chef’s stories, recipes, and the cultural significance behind each dish. It also amplified the voices of SFU’s Black student and staff community through personal reflections, creating an inclusive and meaningful celebration of Black History Month.
