This novel sparked a lively and thought-provoking discussion, earning a perfect 5/5 for the conversation even as the book itself landed a respectable 3.75/5. Members were captivated by the story’s ambitious blending of horror, magical realism, and social commentary. While our deep dive revealed some plot holes, a weak character arc, and a rushed ending, the consensus was that the story was an entertaining page-turner that elicited truly visceral reactions. We especially appreciated the introduction to "hungry ghosts" in Chinese folklore and it's use as a metaphor for Cora’s journey as a mixed-race woman caught between worlds searching for belonging.
