SFU School of Medicine Welcomes Provincial Ministers and MLAs to Surrey Campus
The SFU School of Medicine was pleased to welcome provincial ministers and MLAs to its Surrey campus on January 29 for a look at the School’s interim teaching and administrative spaces and its innovative approach to medical education.
During the visit, guests explored how emerging technologies are being integrated into the learning environment to support medical training, from digital tools that enhance clinical education to innovations designed to prepare learners for the realities of modern health care. Ministers and MLAs also had the opportunity to engage directly with faculty and staff, gaining insight into the collaborative work underway to build a new model of medical education rooted in community needs.
A highlight of the visit was an interactive preview of the School’s Technology Innovation Lab, where guests were able to see—and experience firsthand—how technology is being used to support teaching, learning, and future clinical practice. Conversations throughout the day focused on SFU’s commitment to preparing future physicians through hands-on, community-based training, with a strong emphasis on primary care, innovation, and equity in health systems.
The School of Medicine extends its thanks to Jessie K. Sunner, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills; Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food; Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit; Rohini Arora, MLA for Burnaby East; Niki Sharma, Attorney General and Deputy Premier; and Tamara Davidson, Minister of Environment and Parks, for taking the time to visit, ask thoughtful questions, and engage with the School’s work.
