Introducing The Advance: Exclusive research, insights and stories from SFU

The Advance is Simon Fraser University's new monthly newsletter, featuring exclusive insights from university leaders and researchers, and stories on how the SFU community is advancing knowledge and tackling the critical issues of our time.

Each month, the newsletter takes an in-depth look at a pressing topic through the At Issue section, with exclusive commentary from an SFU leader or expert and related feature stories. The newsletter will also feature exclusive videos, top SFU News stories, and highlights from major media coverage featuring SFU researchers and initiatives, so you don’t miss any of the latest news at SFU.

Against the backdrop of rapidly shifting technology in education and global uncertainty, the first edition of The Advance asks: “What are universities for?”

As the post-secondary sector has a moment of self-reflection, SFU President Joy Johnson shares her thoughts on the university’s role in these challenging times and why she remains a believer in the power of post-secondary institutions.  

Launching on September 29, the first edition also looks at how the new Stephens Family School of Medicine is helping B.C. address its health-care crisis (do not miss an exclusive behind-the-scenes video tour of the school’s learning space) and more stories on how SFU researchers are helping tackle challenges in our communities.

The Advance will also bring you the top SFU News and media stories of the month – directly to your inbox. 

Future editions will look at other pressing issues, such as whether artificial intelligence can be a force for good, and what SFU researchers are doing to tackle the climate crisis. Plus, there will be plenty more on emerging research and innovations at SFU.
