Assistant Professor

The Department of Global Humanities at Simon Fraser University invites applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is July 15, 2027.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate for this appointment with expertise in the literary, rhetorical and social worlds of Ancient Greece (in the classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras) and a solid grasp of Greek and Latin political thought and practice.  While grounded in the above, the preferred candidate should also be sensitive to the connections maintained between the Greek and West Asian and/or North African worlds.

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. Candidates must have completed their PhD in Classics or Ancient History by the time of application.

Research and teaching competence in both Ancient Greek and Latin are required, and the ability to teach courses on Ancient Rome are desirable. Research competence in other ancient languages from West Asia or North Africa, as well as proficiency in modern Greek, is an asset, but not required.

The candidate must demonstrate the following:

• A strong record of research productivity commensurate with their experience 

• Establishment of, or potential for, a successful research program

• Potential for, or demonstrated excellence in, teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum  

• Ability to engage a diverse student body

• Potential for teaching and supervising graduate students in our MA program 

• Potential for contributing to the Department, Faculty, University and the academic community, or demonstrated service contributions to the academic community

• Potential as an active member of the community of Hellenists at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Centre for Hellenic Studies 

Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the University’s research excellence through a rigorous research program. The candidate will also be expected to teach across the undergraduate curriculum and supervise MA students. A normal teaching load for a tenure-track faculty member is an equivalent of four courses per year over two 13-week semesters. Finally, it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the Department, Faculty, University, and the academic community through service, including participating in SNF events and serving on the SNF steering committee.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach the following courses:

• HUM 102W (Classical Mythology), both in person and online

• HUM 302W (Athenian Democracy)

• Upper-division offerings in the candidate’s field of expertise

Teaching may also include the following:

• Courses relevant to three of the four existing concentrations in Global Humanities (Hellenic Studies, Mythologies, and Intellectual Culture & Public Engagement)

• Graduate-level course offerings

• Ancient Greek and Latin language courses to interested students

• A statement of teaching philosophy that reflects on both undergraduate teaching and graduate mentorship and the ability to engage a diverse student body

• One full syllabus from a previously taught course or a course that the candidate would like to teach

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. The current salary ranges are based on the 2022-2025 SFU/SFUFA Collective Agreement. A reasonable estimate of the salary range at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 - $133,322.

This is a junior faculty position; only those holding or those eligible to be appointed to the rank will be considered. This position is subject to the availability of funding.

About the Department 

The Department of Global Humanities is an interdisciplinary unit that includes specialists in Classics; Archaeology; Art History; Byzantine, Hellenic, Renaissance and Italian Studies; Religious Studies; Environmental Humanities; Asian, European and transnational literature and film; and Critical Theory. The Department is increasingly interested in non-Western traditions of thought and culture.

The SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies, along with the SNF New Media Lab, is dedicated to bringing the latest in mobile technology and pedagogy to the teaching and learning of Greek and seeks to promote a better understanding of Hellenism in the community by staging events for academic and lay audiences throughout the year. At its core, the Centre focuses and supports research at SFU on Hellenic topics, from Antiquity to present-day Greece, through grants and postdoctoral fellowships. At the same time, the Centre supports undergraduate and graduate studies on Greece's history, language and culture through its home department of Global Humanities.

Please note that all Sessional Instructor positions involve membership in the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU); and are subject to both sufficient enrollment in the course and budgetary authorization. The Humanities Department follows Article XIV (E.2) of the TSSU-SFU Collective Agreement when hiring Sessional Instructors.

Available positions are generally posted on the Human Resources website in mid-October for the Spring term, mid-February for the Summer term, and mid-May for the Fall term.

Please note that "W" courses entail an increased workload and receive an extra base-unit remuneration to reflect this. All posted positions are subject to both sufficient enrollment in the course and budgetary authorization.

Priority of qualified applicants to TA positions in the Department of Global Humanities is in accordance with Article XIII and Article XV of the TSSU-SFU Collective Agreement. Graduate students new to SFU, admitted to either the HUM MA or PhD programs, will have priority for introductory Humanities TA assignments.
