Course Details:
HSCI 206 – The Economics of Health and Health Care (BBY)
- Instructor: Muntasir Rahman
- Lecture: Mo 2:30 PM-5:20 PM
Course Specific Information:
The Economics of Health and Health Care is an introductory undergraduate course covering the application of economic principles to health care and health policy. Topics include demand for health and health care, efficiency, markets, health care financing and insurance, physician supply and behaviour, and economic evaluation. The TA will primarily be responsible for grading written assignments and examinations using marking rubrics. Applicants should have a solid foundation in economics, preferably through upper-level undergraduate coursework in microeconomics, and be familiar with concepts such as opportunity cost, supply and demand, technical and allocative efficiency, market failure, and equity. They should also be comfortable applying economic reasoning to written analyses. Familiarity with health economics (e.g., the application of economic concepts to health policy) or economic evaluation would be considered an asset.
HSCI – 432 Seminar in Epidemiology (BBY)

Course Specific Information:
This upper-level undergraduate course provides a broad, interdisciplinary overview of infectious disease epidemiology, with particular emphasis on health surveillance, study design, and statistical methods. It builds on knowledge gained in HSCI 230 and other upper-level epidemiology and statistics courses. Using a case-study approach, the course requires students to complete group activities both in and outside of class. The teaching assistant should have taken an upper-level or graduate epidemiology course, be prepared to contribute to in-class discussion, and have sufficient epidemiology background to grade a final project based on an epidemiology study design grant proposal. Knowledge of infectious diseases and public health surveillance is an asset.
HSCI 442 D100 – Immunology Laboratory (BBY)

Course Specific Information:
TAs will be responsible for providing feedback on lab reports and should demonstrate the ability to support team-based learning in a laboratory setting. TAs should have a background in immunology, molecular or cell biology, or a related discipline. Experience with flow cytometry, ELISA, and basic cell culture techniques is expected, and familiarity with FlowJo and GraphPad Prism is strongly preferred.
TAs are expected to complete EHS lab safety training, attend orientation, assist during all scheduled class sessions, and provide support via SFU Canvas.
The number of Base Units (BU) will depend on the course enrolment. The BU range for HSCI courses with tutorials is 2.17 – 5.17. The BU range for HSCI courses without tutorials is 2.17 – 4.17.

Qualifications for the TA positions in HSCI courses include experience with course subject matter obtained either via successful coursework completed in the area or direct practical experience. Course subject matter can be found described in the SFU calendar.
Qualified TAs will also have demonstrated proficiency in English communication skills, both oral and written.
Applicants will not be considered for a position in a course in which they are currently enrolled.
