Britney Dinh-Vu wins first prize in SLC Writing Contest

February 27, 2026

Congratulations to Britney Dinh-Vu for winning the first prize in the Middle Years category of the Student Learning Commons Undergraduate Writing Contest

Britney submitted a term paper written as coursework for Writing for Linguistics (LING 282W) during Fall 2025. Her instructor, senior lecturer Heather Bliss, noted that she is incredibly proud of Britney's excellent work.

Britney's paper is soon to be published on the SLC Undergraduate Writing Contest website. It is titled The Wicked Shift of the West: An Investigation on Regional Variations of the Canadian Shift Within BC

Writing for Linguistics (LING 282W) is an exciting course in which you learn to solve linguistic puzzles. This course explores the foundations of linguistic argumentation in core areas such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Students read and discuss primary literature in order to understand how to formulate hypotheses and evaluate them. They also learn how to use writing to construct their own solutions to challenging linguistic problems, and Britney used these skills gained in the course to write her winning paper.

Note: Britney Dinh-Vu's winning paper will be published here shortly.
