Electric Vehicles

Starting September 1, 2026, Level 2 EV charging will move to a cost-recovery model, meaning users will pay for parking and for the electricity they consume at BC Hydro rates. This approach aligns costs with usage, while helping ensure charging infrastructure remains available and sustainable as demand grows.

Level 1 charging in West Parkade 6000 will remain complimentary for indoor permit holders. There are 42 spaces at this location.

Surrey SRYE’s Level 2 charging will also move to the same cost-recovery model based on BC Hydro rates starting September 1.

SFU's Burnaby campus currently has two different types of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations on campus:

Level 1 Charging Outlets:

SFU has Level 1 charging outlets in the 6000 level of the West Parkade, and are available to any Indoor permit holder or daily parker. These Level 1 Charging Outlets are smart outlets which require a user provided cord, and will provide approximately 8km of range for each hour charged. There is no additional charge for electricity to use these spaces, but regular permit/hourly parking rates apply.

Level 2 Charging Stations:

SFU currently has five Chargepoint Electric Vehicle Charging Locations on campus. These level 2 charging stations require a credit card to activate the chargers, and starting September 1st, 2026, users will be required to pay for the electricity consumed, as well as the permit or daily rate for the lot.

Who is eligible to use each station?
