SFU legend Jay Triano has received Canada’s highest sporting honour, the Order of Sport, earning his induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame—he was inducted during the 70th Order of Sports Awards on November 4.

The Order of Sport recognizes athletes, builders and teams whose achievements have shaped Canadian sport and created opportunities for future generations. Triano joins an esteemed group of Canadians whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the nation’s sporting landscape.

A prolific scorer during his time at SFU from 1977 to 1981, Triano finished his collegiate career holding 11 school records, including an all-time scoring mark of 2,616 points.

Triano returned to SFU as a coach before taking the reins of Canada’s national team in 1999, and guided the program to its first Olympic appearance since 1988 at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Triano continued to break barriers throughout his coaching career. In 2008, he became the first Canadian-born and Canadian-trained head coach in NBA history when he was named head coach of the Toronto Raptors.

Today, Triano serves as an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers. His decades-long NBA career has also included coaching roles with the Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets, Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks.

His induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame recognizes a lifetime of achievement and leadership, as well as his enduring impact on basketball in Canada and beyond.
