SMALL FILE MEDIA FESTIVAL 2026 is calling

Get crunching! The Small File Media Festival is calling for submissions: "We invoke our punk-chic call to action with a focus on the vibe-shifting, aura-casting potential of Small File Ecomedia. Artists, activists, media pirates, rogue technologists, and filmmakers alike are invited to take part in a revolutionary mode of creating and consuming moving-image media. This is a call-out, an all-out intervention to save the world one pixel at a time!" The deadline is July 1, 2026, at midnight. More HERE.

Talking about Dancing Through to the Other Side

The SCA's Justine A. Chambers and SCA alumnus Luciana Freire D’Anunciação joined dance artist and curator Jenn Goodwin and Vanessa (VK) Kwan, who's the Director + Curator of the Libby Leshgold Gallery, for a conversation with Charo Neville, the Curator at the Kamloops Art Gallery, presented in support of the exhibition Dancing Through to the Other Side, with Chambers, D’Anunciação, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Andrea Nann, and Dreamwalker, which runs to September 12, 2026. The SCA's Laura U. Help TPE!

Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as conductor and Artistic Director, have launched their "first-ever Spring/Summer fundraiser," and are "aiming to raise $6,000 to keep Turning Point Ensemble thriving." If you're able to donate before June 30, 2026, TPE are able to take advantage of "a generous $3,000 matching fund from [their] supporters," so that "every dollar you give will be doubled." Because June is National Indigenous History Month in so-called Canada, with National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, CBC Books shared "20 books to read for National Indigenous History Month and beyond," including A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt, which features work by SCA alumnus Michelle Sound on the cover. Stir on the Rumpus Awards

Ocean Falls in the VIFF Collection

The Vancouver International Film Festival have launched VIFF Collection, "a permanent online exhibition of short films from the next wave of leading Western Canadian storytellers," including Ocean Falls (2015) by SCA alumni Ryan Ermacora and Jessica Johnson. More HERE.

Obuwoma and Snack Witch in Pathway to Diversity

SCA alumni Ogheneofegor Obuwoma and Snack Witch Joni Cheung are part of Pathway to Diversity, "a national arts project" that includes "exhibitions and workshops across BC, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Quebec" to mark "50 years since Canada’s 1976 Immigration Act," presented by City in Colour Cooperative. Inverso Productions announced that SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman and Josh Martin are their 2026 Performance Research Project (PRP) Guest Artists, and, with Lesley Telford, will be holding a 10 week intensive from September 21 – November 27, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, at The Dance Centre (677 Davie St., Vancouver). SCA alumnus Didier Morelli shared a roundup of recent texts across a number of publications, including: entries on Sylvie Tourangeau and Tanya Mars for Routledge's Fifty Key Performance Artists, edited by T. Nikki Cesare Schotzko and Adriana Disman; a text on zipertatou for Galerie B-312's 30 ans. Conjuguer l'espace au temps, which looks back over the history of the gallery on its 30th anniversary; the essay "Walking after Kim Jones and Papo Colo" in the special issue on “Walking as Applied Critical Practices,” edited by Deidre Heddon, Stephanie Spinggay, and Harry Wilson, from RiDE: Research in Drama Education, The Journal of Applied Theatre and Performance; and an essay in Duologies, the first monograph for the artist Lucie Rocher. Great work!

Juneteenth (and Emancipation Day)

June 19 is recognized as Juneteenth in the USA, and is increasingly also recognized up here in so-called Canada, as well. Juneteenth marks the delayed reception of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. In Canada, August 1 is recognized as Emancipation Day, which "marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire." More HERE.

A Safe Distance screenings

After its World Premiere at 2026's SXSW in March, SCA alumnus Gloria Mercer's A Safe Distance, with Mercer as Director and Co-Producer (with Nic Altobelli and SCA alumni Aidan West), and SCA alumni West as Screenwriter and Devan Scott as Cinematographer, the film has had a number of screenings, including its West Coast Premiere at Frameline50 and its Canadian Premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Horror in Seconds calling for monsters

Horror in Seconds, the 60-seconds or less horror film fest for "filmmakers of colour," founded and directed by SCA alumnus Doaa Magdy, is calling for films on the theme of "monsters" to show in the Brooklyn, New York, or Vancouver edition of their next run, with a deadline of September 22, 2026.
